International Scientific Conference to mark the 70th anniversary of the Institute of Ethnography SASA

Sirogojno (the Old Village Open-Air Museum), Serbia, 8 ‒ 10 September, 2017
Organizer: The Institute of Ethnography SASA

Conference program is available for download.

During a period of more than a century, ethnology has become transformed from a descriptive science of the folk to ethnology and anthropology as a scientific discipline that gives thorough analytical and critical insights into the totality of culture. The Institute of Ethnography of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) is important for the development of this discipline in Serbia. The original mission of the Institute was to organize a systematic and planned research into settlements, origin of the population, their lifestyle, customs and beliefs and folklore in Serbia, while it is now a leading research institution involved in the field of ethnology and anthropology. Issues regarding cultural heritage, migrations, identity, traditional and modern relations in contemporary culture are some of the frameworks within which the Institute’s associates conduct their current research. Despite the fact that the intensive demographic, migratory and economic movements are partly influenced by various identity strategies and elements of cultural heritage, humanities and social sciences remain marginalized. The Institute’s projects are based on an effort to respond to the current issues of contemporary culture, and the roles of groups and individuals in its creation.

On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the Institute of Ethnography of SASA is organizing an international scientific conference in the Old Village Open-Air Museum in Sirogojno (Serbia), and its topic embraces former and current theoretical, methodological and research courses in ethnology and anthropology, with a special focus on Southeastern Europe, as well as beyond. The objective of this conference to mark a special occasion is to bring together previous and contemporary ethno-anthropological knowledge and practices, thereby providing a view of the discipline’s developmental dynamics in the last 70 years, and its possible courses in the future. A thematic survey of retrospectives and perspectives in ethnology and anthropology should encourage the conference participants to focus on reviewing previous research trends, theoretical and methodological approaches, formulation and problematization of topics, as well as on current trends in defining research areas and on contemporary theoretical and methodological orientations. The conference is conceived as a platform for discussion among academics working in the fields of ethnology and anthropology from related institutions and disciplines. The conference will also provide another opportunity to present the Institute of Ethnography SASA to the academia and general public. As 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the Institute of Ethnography, this conference will be an opportunity for the participants from Serbia and other countries to get together, discuss experiences and knowledge cumulated in the field during the last 70 years, as well as to express their views and perspectives on the planned strategies in humanities in the 21st century.

We invite authors to contribute to the following topics, although further ideas will be welcomed and discussed:
