SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF JOVAN CVIJIĆ`S BIRTH

JOVAN CVIJIĆ AND SERBIAN ETHNOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY

October 10th 2015, Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade

Anniversaries (and jubilees) are most often the occasion to look back, to remember, but also to review and reevaluate what has passed. The aim of scientific conference Jovan Cvijić and Serbian Ethnology and Anthropology, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Jovan Cvijić`s birth, is to mark this significant event by reviewing and critically reevaluating his historical role and contribution to Serbian ethnology and anthropology. Until recently, Jovan Cvijić was undoubtedly considered to be one of its founding fathers. However, nowadays his work and influence in Serbian ethnology and anthropology are often rejected as obsolete. Is it possible that the new readings of Cvijic’s work could shed a different light and reaffirm its significance in contemporary times? To which extent are Cviji’s scientific concepts still implicitly or explicitly present in the work of contemporary researchers? Can we still learn something from this distinguished scholar, intellectual and public figure? These questions are more or less the core issues the participants at this Conference will address. Not surprisingly, special attention will be given to Cvijić’s concept of anthropogeography, and ethnopsychology as its part. We hope that papers presented at the Conference will provide a solid foundation for a constructive and rewarding discussion.
