Sonja Žakula je rođena 1985. godine u Beogradu gde je završila osnovnu školu i Filološku gimnaziju (odeljenje za klasične jezike). Diplomirala je 2009. godine na Odeljenju za etnologiju i antropologiju Filozofskog fakulteta u Beogradu, a potom je na istom odeljenju 2010. godine odbranila master tezu pod nazivom „Naučno kreiranje kulturnih predstava o životinjama“. Rad je osvojio nagradu odeljenja za najbolji master rad u 2010. godini. Na istom odeljenju je doktorirala 2017. godine, sa doktorskom disertacijom „Zoološki vrtovi u Srbiji u antropološkoj perspektivi“

Od 2004. do 2009. godine je bila angažovana kao mlađa odnosno studentkinja saradnica na seminaru Etnologije/Socio-kulturne antropologije/Antropologije u Istraživačkoj Stanici Petnica, a 2009. godine, po diplomiranju postaje stručna saradnica i zamenica rukovoditeljke seminara. Od 2013. do kraja 2017. godine rukovodila je seminarom Antropologije u IS Petnica.

Tokom 2009. godine je bila angažovana kao istraživačica-saradnica na projektu „Upravljanje visokim obrazovanjem u Srbiji“, koji je realizovao Centar za obrazovne politike iz Beograda. 

Od 2011. godine je angažovana kao istraživačica na projektu Kulturno nasleđe i identitet  Etnografskog instituta SANU, prvo kao pripravnica, potom kao istraživačica saradnica, a od 2018. godine kao naučna saradnica. 

Osnovne oblasti njenog interesovanja su: antropologija ljudsko-životinjskih odnosa, antropologija interneta i virtuelnih svetova, antropologija materijalne kulture i studije panka. 

U školskoj 2017/2018. godini pohađala je, i uspešno završila I i II nivo (semestar) obrazovanja u public relations-u, nastavnog programa izrađenog prema standardu IPRA - International Public Relations Association pri Poslovnoj Školi za Public Relations u Beogradu. 

Odlično govori engleski jezik (i bavi se stručnim prevodom na i sa engleskog jezika), a služi se i italijanskim i nemačkim, te latinskim i starogrčkim.

  • 31.10.2018 Moderated the discussion on the ethnographic film "PET kućnih ljubimaca" as part of the "Ethnological films in Manak's house" program.
  • 7.2.2019 Participated in a roundtable discussion on human-animal relations, as part of the "Co-voyagers" exhibition at the French Institute in Belgrade.
  • 19.4.2019 Participated in roundtable discussion on the preservation of wild animal habitats and humans' attitudes toward them as part of the opening ceremony for the exhibition "Instinct and terrain" at the French Institute in Begrade.
  • 24.4.2019 Participated in the discussion on the relationship between humans and animals in zoos as part of the "EMIL (B5044)" exhibition at the Art Gallery of the Belgrade Cultural Center.

  • Since 2013 a participant in "European Researchers' night - Serbia" funded by the Marie Curie Foundation as part of the Horizon 2020 Project.
