Former directors of the EI SASA were: Vojislav Radovanović (1947–1957), Borivoje Drobnjaković (1957–1961), Mirko Barjaktrović, PhD (1961–1969), the academic Branislav Kojić (1969–1971), the academic Atanasije Urošević (1971–1973), Professor Milorad Vasović, PhD (1973–1978), Professor Petar Vlahović, PhD (1978–1982), Milka Jovanović, PhD and Desanka Nikolić, PhD (1982–1984), Professor Dušan Bandić, PhD (1984–1989) and Nikola Pantelić, PhD (1989–2001). Professor Dragana Radojičić, PhD has been the director of the Institute since 2002.
