Slavica Vasić Mitrović is a co-founder of "BIBIJA" - Roma Women Center (1998), serving as the Director. This pioneering organization focuses on human rights, women's rights, and empowering Roma women in areas like education, health, economic empowerment, and political participation. As a founder of the Roma Women Network in 2004, she played a pivotal role in uniting 35 Roma NGOs and initiatives in Serbia. She has dedicated her career to making a positive impact on the lives of the Roma community in Serbia. With over two decades of experience, her work has spanned various government roles, civil society, and grassroots activism. Among other appointments, starting in June 2006 and continuing through various roles until June 2016, she was engaged with the Office for Human and Minority Rights of the Government of the Republic of Serbia. Some of her specific responsibilities included providing technical support to the Government's Council for the Improvement of the Status of Roma, implementing affirmative actions in education, and supporting the budgeting of measures outlined in the Action Plan. Prior to this, from March 2011 to July 2012, she was an Advisor with the Directorate for Human and Minority Rights. During this time, she contributed to the coordination of the development and implementation of the Strategy and Action Plan for the Improvement of the Status of Roma in Serbia. In recognition of her contributions, she received the EU Award for Roma Integration in 2019, dedicated to individual Roma women grassroots activists. This award celebrates the significant changes brought to the Roma community by these activists, who often put themselves at risk to be role models and break established traditions.
