Noel Putnik, PhD, research associate of the SASA Institute of Ethnography, gave a lecture at the Seminar for Mathematics and Music of the SASA Mathematical Institute, entitled “De harmonia mundi: philological-historical review of the concepts of symmetry and harmony”. The lecture pointed out, through an etymological-semantic analysis of the terms “harmony” and “symmetry”, as well as a brief consideration of their confirmations in the writings of ancient authors, their multiple importance in various areas of human spirit: philosophy, religion, mathematics, science and art, especially visual art and music. Special attention was paid to the development of the concept of harmony among Pythagoreans and Plato, for whom this concept lay at the basis of the cosmological concept of harmony of spheres.
