At a Prix Ars Electronica Award Ceremony, held in Design Centre Linz (Austria), on September 4, 2025, HEROINE-Heritage of Emancipation: Empowering Roma Women through Networks of Solidarity project team was awarded the prestigious EU Grand Prize for Citizen Science for 2025. This highest recognition in the field of citizen science is awarded to projects that, through active participation of citizens, develop innovative and socially engaged approaches, and, at the same time, offer relevant scientific answers to the most complex challenges of modern society.

The awarding of the HEROINE project represents an outstanding achievement for the Serbian scientific community and a strong confirmation that inclusivity, solidarity, and social engagement are recognised as core values within the European scientific community. This further highlights the significance of citizen science in empowering marginalized groups and promoting social changes.

The HEROINE project is organised by the SASA Institute of Ethnography in collaboration with the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade and the Roma Women Centre “Bibija”. The research focuses on the heritage of Roma women`s emancipation and on the development of solidarity networks that support their empowerment in modern society. The project is funded by the Centre for the Promotion of Science through the Public Call for Citizen Science Research, which confirms the importance of the institutional support for the development of the innovative models of scientific work based on citizen participation.
